The 75 Gallon Water Heater - Choosing the Best

!±8± The 75 Gallon Water Heater - Choosing the Best

Because of its' large water supply capabilities, many choose to purchase a 75 gallon water heater to provide hot water to a commercial structure or really big home. If you are in the market for one, how do you find the best model at the best value? Below are the main factors to consider.

1) GPH recovery rating. This rating tells you how many gallons of hot water the model can produce in a one hour period. The higher the rating, the faster and more efficiently a specific water heater can produce hot water. The ratings vary tremendously and more expense is usually related to higher ratings so choose one that fits your needs but does not exceed them.

2) Runs on natural gas. There are debates over what fuel source is best for big models, like 75 gallon water heaters. It is our contention, like that of many industry experts, that natural gas is the best fuel source. It is the cleanest burning, least expensive, and most effective at powering the heating elements.

3) Rust proof. Make sure the model you choose has spent time and money on putting measures in place to protect the unit from rust and other kinds of corrosion. The models that fail to, always fail faster and are, in many case, much less durable. There have been technological advances in this area that make it very affordable to add this feature so there really is no reason why the model you purchase shouldn't have it.

4) Warranty. Simply put, the model you choose should have a solid warranty. If it doesn't, chances are there is a reason. That reason is usually because the manufacturer knows that the chances of performance problems or break down are high and they can't afford to handle all of the warranty claims that will come in. Stay away from short, limited warranties.

Jetted Soaking Tubs Are a Tough Act to Beat

!±8± Jetted Soaking Tubs Are a Tough Act to Beat

The jetted soaking tubs available today take the traditional soaking bath and super-charge it. Traditional soaking baths have been used since earliest times. Primitive man discovered that hot natural springs had a beneficial affect after a hard day of hunting and gathering. The love of the soaking hot bath continued with the early Egyptians and was brought to a true art form with the Romans. The Roman's elaborate bath houses and the traditions developed around using them were spread throughout the Roman Empire. The art of bathing was highly developed throughout Asia, as well. The Japanese may have developed the soaking bath to its highest level.

One thing that all of these baths had in common was that the water was static, that is, not mechanically circulated. Mechanically circulating the bath water was first developed in the mid-1950s by the Jacuzzi Brothers. The Jacuzzi brothers were an actual group of siblings who had a knack for invention. They invented the first enclosed airplane cabin and went on to work in the agricultural pump industry. In 1956 they modified one of their pumps to circulate water in the bath. This was done to help give relief to an arthritic relative. The Jacuzzi brothers began making this pump, the J-300, available to the public as a therapeutic aid. The modern whirlpool bath was invented by Roy Jacuzzi in 1968, and the rest, as they say, is history.

The use of tubs using water that's pulsated by jets has become a part of everyday life for many of us. Modern jetted tubs will use either a water jet or an air jet. While both types create movement in the water, there are some real differences in them.

Water jets work by having water taken from the tub and pumping it back into the tub through the jets. With air jets, the water comes back through many small openings at a lower pressure than the water jets use. The air jets can be set to offer a wide range of pulsations and the motor for it isn't as loud as the one used with water jets. Also, you can use bubble bath and bath oils with an air jet tub; this isn't recommended for a water jet tub.

Water jets tend to have fewer, more powerful jets than the air jet models. You can't use bath oils and bubble bath in them because this can clog the system, as can hair or small objects that get sucked up into the system. Whether you choose air or water jets, jetted soaking tubs can add a little luxury to your life.

A Solar Water Heater Can Save You Money

!±8± A Solar Water Heater Can Save You Money

There are many common household appliances that are labeled as "major energy consumers." Items such as a refrigerator consume a great deal of energy because they are in constant use. Similarly, a water heater is constantly using up energy in order to maintain adequate supplies of hot water. However, by switching out your conventional water heater for a solar water heater, these operating costs can be all but eliminated.

Water heating via solar power is not a new idea. There are many examples of rudimentary solar heating methods dating back to the early 20th century. In most cases, these units were nothing more than a large metal water tank that had been painted black and set out in an area of consistent, direct sunlight. The black paint helped to absorb solar energy, which was then transferred to the water inside the tank. While these systems were somewhat effective, they were largely inefficient. Fortunately, modern technology has created many, more efficient methods.

Today, a solar water heater is most often made up of several different components. Of course, the most common component is the water tank, which is used to store the heated water. However, other components can include a solar energy collector, a water pump, and various lengths of tubing; all of which play an important part in the overall system.

The solar collector is the primary means of generating the hot water. In most cases they are built as a black box with a glass top. Inside this box is a long length of tube that enters on one side, winds back and forth through the box, and then exits on the other side. As water is pumped through this tube, sunlight enters through the glass top and heats the water inside. This heated water is then pumped into the storage tank for later use. The temperature is maintained by circulating the colder water from the bottom of the tank through the solar collector, and then back.

Depending on the particular system, other components are also common. Water pumps, for example, are used quite a lot. However, they do require some electricity and therefore need to be installed near a power outlet.

Swimming Pool Maintenance - Choosing Between Salt Water Or Chemicals

!±8± Swimming Pool Maintenance - Choosing Between Salt Water Or Chemicals

In North America, chlorine is by far the most popular method to sanitize a pool. However, it is not the only way. Long a favorite in other parts of the world, saltwater swimming pools are starting to gain popularity all over North America. Proponents of salt water pools claim since there is no chlorine in the pool water, it feels smooth or 'silky', will not irritate your eyes or skin, is safe to swallow when swimming and will not fade bright colored swim wear. Some also claim the saltwater pools are virtually maintenance free, less costly to operate and more environmentally friendly since they use a totally natural product - salt - rather than a manufactured chemical -chlorine. Sounds like a lot of good reasons to install a saltwater pool, but perhaps we should take more balanced look at the discussion.

Common Myths of Saltwater Pools

Saltwater pools contain large amounts of salt. First, here is an interesting fact - saltwater pools do not really have salt water in them, at least not salt water like in the ocean. A properly maintained saltwater pool does have salinity but is well below that of ocean water (somewhere between 10 and 20 percent), much closer to the salinity level of water that has been passed through a water conditioner or softener.

Saltwater pools are chlorine free: A saltwater pool is not a chlorine free pool. In salt water pools, when the water circulates through the pump and filter system it also passes through a chlorine generator. Inside the chlorine generator an electronic process combines hydrogen molecules from the water (made up of hydrogen and oxygen) with chlorine from the salt (sodium and chlorine) to produce hypochlorous acid which is carried in the circulating water back into the pool. This hypochlorous acid is what keeps the pool free of algae and bacteria. So in reality, the main difference between the two systems is with one you need to store chlorine and add it intermittently, while in the other the system is constantly adding chlorine when the pool is running.

Saltwater pools are maintenance free: Remember, the chlorine generator only adds chlorine to the water, it does not replace the requirement to monitor and balance the pool water. In order to maintain pH and alkalinity, the owner will need to regularly test the water and when necessary, add chemicals to bring the water into proper balance. As well, the chlorine generator itself requires regular maintenance. As part of the electrolysis process, calcium builds up on the titanium plates inside the generator and the calcium needs to be cleaned off or the system will no longer be able to produce chlorine.

Saltwater pools are less costly: In fact, installing a salt water pool is more expensive initially than a chlorine based system - primarily because of the need to include a chlorine generator as part of the pool equipment. However, after installation you only need to add inexpensive salt (regular table salt or salt pellets used in water conditioners works well). So, once the system is installed salt water pools will be less costly to run since there is no need to constantly buy (expensive) chlorine to add to the pool.

The 'fly in the ointment' here is since chlorine is only generated when the saltwater system is running, many experts suggest you should run your salt water system 24/7. So in effect you are trading the cost of Chlorine for the cost of electricity and depending on the price of power in your area, a saltwater system could in fact be more costly.

Another potential cost factor is the chlorine generator itself. Besides the initial cost of approximately 00, they have an expected life span in the range of 10,000 hours of operation. Depending on the length of your pool season, that could be as little as three years before it might need to be replaced.

So what have we learned?

Compared to a chlorine pool, no one can argue that the water in a saltwater pool does not feel different - it's smoother and softer. Also, because the chlorine level is so low, the water will not smell or irritate a swimmer's eyes and skin. As well, there are undoubtedly environmental benefits to using salt rather than chlorine. However, the operating costs are highly dependent on the price of electricity so, it's impossible to generalize as to which system is actually less costly. Salt water or chlorine? It is an individual decision.

Pool Accessories - Things You Need For Great Pool Fun

!±8± Pool Accessories - Things You Need For Great Pool Fun

Nothing is more fun than jumping in the pool on a very hot summer day. Keeping the pool in great shape and working right all the time you will need the following pool accessories. We have some of the most important things you will need to keep it running at peak performance.

Maybe one of the most import pool accessories you will need is a pump. This is important for many reasons and some things must be known before you go out and purchase one. Knowing the size of the pool will be needed to get a pool pump. The pump circulates the water through the filter system and keeps unwanted items out of the swimming area. This helps protect people who use it and keeps it at peak performance. Many people will sometimes get a cheaper pump thinking it's a good deal. You're better off in the long run to always go with the better one. Circulating chemicals are another big benefit that over time you will appreciate. It will give you less trouble and more time to enjoy your pool.

Chemicals are another one of the accessories that you will also need to buy and that is the easy part. The really hard part knows exactly how much you need to add. One way to help you out is with test strips. These strips you put in the water and hold them up to a chart and it will tell you what needs to be added to your pool. This makes it easier. Now you can also use test kits, but these will take much more work so it's really up to you which way you want to go about it. Chemicals are a very vital part to your pools success and should not be taken for granted. Pools that are not taken care of with proper chemical filtration can lead to people getting sick, if you keep this in mind than you should have no problem keeping it safe.

Now if you have kids than one of the pool accessories you will want to add our pool toys and floats. These come in a variety of shapes and sizes and will keep them busy for hours. Now many people who buy these flotation devices need to also remember they are not life saving devices. Kids have drowned with these floats that they buy at the store. Don't leave kids unsupervised with this type of flotation device as you never know what could happen? Always think safety first.

Last and surely not the least are the covers. This accessory is something that will pay for itself over and over again. It will save you endless hours on cleaning and give you even more time to enjoy your pool. These covers are very important especially if you live in a cold weather state where you can't enjoy it all year round. Swimming pools take work as they aren't something that you can just set up and forget about. They need leaned and proper attention to get the most out of them. People who enjoy them the most out the ones who take the time to keep the maintenance up on them. These are just some of the accessories you need to help you have a trouble free-swimming season. Use them properly and you can enjoy your pool more than ever before

Faster Hot Water Provides Water Conservation - Be Green!

!±8± Faster Hot Water Provides Water Conservation - Be Green!

We all do it. Run water down the drain while waiting for hot water. Who is going to jump into the shower when the water is freezing cold! Well no one. Is there a way to avoid running all of that water down the drain?

Yes. A hot water circulating system will eliminate the need to run that water down the drain. There are several types of hot water circulating systems available, and they are fairly easy to understand.

The first type of system is the full-time circulating system. In this type of system the hot water outlet of the water heater connects to a pipe that runs past each fixture in the home, and then back to the water heater. A small pump circulates the hot water through the pipe, thus there is always hot water near every fixture. Instant hot water!

But there is a price to pay! This is an expensive system to operate, since the pump consumes some energy and is running constantly; you have to pay for that energy. But far greater is the expense of heating the water. Heating water is very expensive, and so when you pump it through a long pipe, and the pipe is losing heat energy to the atmosphere around it, you end up spending a lot of money to heat the hot water piping and its immediate surroundings.

You can place the pump on a timer, so that during periods that people don't normally use hot water, the pump is turned off. That helps, but it is still very expensive. Some systems also control the pump by monitoring the temperature of the water. The pump turns off when it reaches a set point, and then back on when the water drops to the lower set point. This reduces the energy consumption by the pump, but does little to reduce the far larger energy losses of the heat loss from the system.

Another problem with these systems is that they require a dedicated return line from the furthest fixture back to the water heater to function. This is an expensive option when building a home, and a far more expensive option to add on to an existing home.

There is another class of hot water circulating systems that do not require a return line. These systems use the cold water line as the return line. The cold water line always connects to the inlet of the water heater, so it will always work. There are a number of approaches being used for these cold water return type hot water circulating systems.

In some instances, for instance, where the water heater is lower than the rest of the system like in homes with a basement, a gravity type system can be used. Since hot water is less dense than cold water, the hot water rises up from the water heater to the fixtures and the cooled off hot water goes down the cold water return line back to the heater. A connection is required between the hot and cold water lines, and a valve that responds to temperatures is installed between them. Without a valve, the hot and cold water would always mix when you used either one.

Some systems use a pump connected between the hot and cold water lines with a built in valve, and as with the full time systems, some are operated via a timer, some are temperature controlled, and some use both methods.

Another type of system is known as a "hot water demand system". With the demand type system, the user must push a button or utilize some other signal to start the pump, and then when hot water reaches the fixture, the pump shuts off.

The demand system is the lowest cost in terms of operating costs since it does not cause any more heat loss than if you just used the hot water fixture without the system. It only pumps when you "demand" hot water. Typically such systems use only to per year in electricity for running the pump.

You obtain your hot water more quickly than if you ran the faucet full blast, and you don't wastefully run water down the drain. You're happy and the environment is happy!
